Description

Hearty Ground Beef and Dumplings is the epitome of comfort food.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (if needed)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • ½ cup frozen mixed vegetables (optional)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for dumplings)
  • ½ cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (for dumplings)
  • 1 tablespoon softened butter
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder

Instructions

  1. Begin by heating your skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Allow it to brown evenly, stirring occasionally to achieve a nice sear. If there’s excess grease, carefully drain it to keep the dish from becoming too oily.
  2. Once the meat is nicely browned, add the diced onion to the pan and cook for about 4 minutes or until it turns translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Stir in the tomato paste, sprinkle the flour, and combine well. Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring continuously until well blended. Season with thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper, and let it simmer for about 8–10 minutes until thickened.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Cut in the softened butter until resembling coarse crumbs. Gradually add milk, stirring until just combined.
  5. Drop heaping tablespoons of dumpling dough over the surface of the beef mixture. Cover the skillet with a tight-fitting lid.
  6. Let the dumplings steam for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  7. After steaming, let everything rest for a few minutes, then serve hot.
